An anti-personnel landmine lies partially exposed in a contaminated area. Local teams and villagers work together to locate and remove mines using basic tools, including specially designed rakes. Over 30 families have been able to return as a result of this work, although the land is not cleared to international standards.

A small Karenni Interim Executive Council (IEC) demining team, supported by Free Burma Rangers, works to clear a heavily contaminated area in Pan Thein village. After nearly a month of work, around a third of the village has been cleared, allowing some families to return after years in displacement. The work is carried out with limited equipment and no formal training. Methods are improvised out of necessity. Recovered landmines and unexploded ordnance are stored in buildings in a nearby town, sometimes close to where families are living.

Frontline positions KNDF troops hold positions south of Moe Bye to prevent Tatmadaw forces from advancing toward Demoso. In some areas, opposing forces are positioned just tens of metres apart. Landmines are deployed defensively, and improvised warning systems, including strings of bells, are set across paths and access routes.
